First week of school, how do you do? It's actually really exciting and I like it here at Western a lot. My classes all seem really interesting, maybe except for Calculus. I've never spent more time in a math lab before now. Meaning, I've never been to a math lab at all. I don't really have a problem with math, I'm not bad at it at all it's just the fact that I took precalc over two years ago. I don't remember anything and suddenly I'm in a class where everyone else has it fresh in their minds and my professor is quite ready to get over the review and right into calc. I'll be fine though, after spending a few hours badgering the guys in the math lab, I'm feeling really good about it and might have even aced the quiz we had on Friday.
I'm super thankful for the bus system here in Kalamazoo. As students, we get to use both the school bus system and the Kalamazoo city buses for free. This means Lazarus, my car, is enjoying a well deserved break and I'm enjoying the fact that I'm saving a lot of gas money.
At least I can say now, that after a week has passed, I am an expert on buses. That was so not the case on Tuesday morning when I was walking to the bus stop for my first day of classes. It was on that walk that I realized, I really had no idea how to ride a bus. I had actually been really excited for this cause it's one of those really stupid little things I've always wanted to do, ride a bus. Makes no sense, I know. Anywho, the only buses I've been on are 1. school buses 2. buses from one fixed point to another aka Disney World style
How do buses even work? A bus route? Does it stop at fixed spots or will it just keep going unless someone pulls that cord or it sees someone waiting at a bus stop? How on earth do you even read a bus schedule? I had tried to study the schedule the best I could the night before but as I arrived at my bus stop all these fears kind of hit me. I had no idea what I was doing. As usual, I was just flying by the seat of my pants. Well, I got there at 10:31 and my bus is supposed to be there at 10:30. Had I missed it? No idea. I panicked cause there was no one else at the bus stop and I didn't want to be late for my first class at 11. I had no idea when the next bus would be and didn't want to risk it so I started walking to school thinking my apartment isn't that far from campus!
My apartment is that far from campus. The walk took me the whole half hour and it was exactly 11am when I walked into my history class, completely sweaty and gross because of course, I had worn skinny jeans, a black shirt and scarf. It was like 85 degrees with humidity out there. Worst decision of my life. Funny how I was late to my bus stop because I'd taken an extra five minutes on myself cause 'oh it's the first day of school, you've got to look good!' I would have much rather of had messed up hair for class than smelling bad. Well, it's my curse to always have interesting first days of school and at least this one wasn't as bad as the day I walked all around completely unaware there was a huge hole in the butt of my pants.
The whole bus thing didn't end there in the morning though. I got done with classes and didn't know when my bus would arrive on campus so I could go back to my apartment. I needed to check but before I did, I called my mum. By the time I got off the phone and checked the website, it was 4:05 and the schedule informed me it would leave campus at 4. The next bus wouldn't leave until 5. So I sat, read, and waited. An hour later, I got on the right bus. But how do I get off a bus? I honestly didn't know what to do. Would it stop near my apartment or do I have to pull that stupid thing? Well, I ended up missing my exit and I got off with this blind guy when he pulled the line. From that point, it was about a twenty minute walk to my apartment. In the heat again. Of course, it's when I got back to my apartment, gross and sweaty again, that I opened the door to meet one of my roommates for the first time. Her name is Emily and that's as far as I got because I didn't want her first impression of me to be that I'm gross. I guess the impression that I'm a reclusive freak isn't much of a trade off because I kind of ran away to my room in order to shower and we haven't talked much since.
At least, Emily and I have talked a little bit more than me and my other roommate, Brandi. Brandi likes to listen to her music constantly and at a very high level. I'm concerned that she might actually be a bit def. Emily is a lot quieter and we all pretty much just chill in our rooms if we're home. There will be plenty of time to get to know them later.
Finished Organ Trail this week, was a really fun game, gonna replay it lots when I have the time. I survived, only one person in my party died, Michael, I'm sorry I missed the bandit that was holding you at gunpoint and I'm sorry that you died by his hand. Anywho, best thing about it though was the credits because look!
Down there by the bottom, is my sister, Cindy! Her boyfriend was the one who co-created the game (I think it was just him and one other guy who made it?) and he thanked her. That's so gooey romantic it makes me sick. Now I just need to go out and buy that Marvel game that just came out the other day and play it because that's one she actually designed with her company so I'll get to see her name in those credits as well. It is as predicted, my sister is going to become rich and famous and I'll just play her video games and cry.
Friday was the Bronco Bash. Lots of clubs putting up tents and giving away free stuff. I got a free Bane poster and a free Prometheus poster from the cinema booth plus other crazy things. It was crazy busy with tons of people. People really go crazy for free stuff!
Edit: I just said 'crazy' three times, three sentences in a row. I apologize but I'm too lazy to fix it.
Edit of the Edit: I'm going to post pictures of my apartment but I realized that I forgot my camera at home and I don't want them to all be ruddy photos from my phone. Patience.

I am so glad you are loving it there. I hope you figure out the bus system and when you do let me know how it works. Do you really pull the thing like in the movies? Do you pay when you get on or off? Or flash a card because it is free for you, which is totally sweet by the way. I really miss you back here but it sounds like you are having a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteI am the master of bus systems now. At least this bus system. We have to show our school ID to get on. (If I weren't a student I'd have to pay for a seasonal bus pass to swipe as I got on) and then it stops at designated places but if you need to get off at any time in between those spots, you pull the thing. Unless the bus is already almost at a bus stop, it will pull over and let you off!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds so big city and legit. I bet you really are a pro.
